1) In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge the forms and conventions of real media products?

Voices are a thriller which goes by all the codes and conventions of the genre. The thriller starts with a young girl acting very possessed and has blood on her face. The main convention we decided to use was not to show viewers everything. The knock at the end of the video leaves the audience with a cliff-hanger, which we see in many thrillers to keep the audience guessing such as Inception (2010). We also added twists so that the thriller could have a good story line, this way the audience is engaged in the clip. These included the mother being very angry towards the girl and not giving her a chance to clean her room. Also, the girl drawing pictures of her killing her mother is a very typical convention of a thriller with children involved. We go into a flashback when the mother finds the pictures in the daughter’s bedroom and we see the mum being suffocated by the girl with a pillow.

We decided to have some sort of criminal like actions from the girl so that she portrays an image of being possessed. Our idea was very unique and it is very difficult to find another thriller with around about the same story line. The closest I could find was Orphan (2009) the main differences between our thriller and Orphan are that the girl is not actually a child and that she is trying to kill the children in our thriller the girl is trying to kill the mother.

2) How does your media product represent particular social groups?

Voices stereotypes both males and females. At the beginning of the video we have the young girl possessed. She is portrayed as being very demented through actions i.e. scratching the wall. The blood on her face indicates that she has killed someone and strengthens the features that make her un-child like. Dressed in a red cardigan and black trousers we can tell that this girl is not very feminine. Using a young female to play this role makes the audience identify straight away that this girl is not ordinary. This is because the average girl would probably be wearing light colours such as pink or white our character is dressed in dark colours and the way she acts very animal like suggests she is not normal.
The family is represented as a middle class family who are White British origin. The mother Franky is shown as being the authoritative one in the family as she is the one who enters the daughter’s room and tells her off for everything she has done wrong. The father on the other hand is shown as the head of the family as he makes the final decision on what the girl should do. As he leaves to get in his car he says “Bethany do as your mother tells you” this shows that he agrees with his wife and Bethany now has to do what she was told.

3) What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

Voices are an English independent film therefore it is very unlikely that it would be funded by major Hollywood film studios such as Warner Brothers or Paramount. The UK Film Council would be the best organisation to fund our production. They fund low budgeted films (around 50%). Voices would attract the attention of the UK film council as it uses British actors and it is also set in London, Harrow.
Our thriller could also be broadcasted on film four or ITV. The BBFC rating of 15 that we decided for our thriller allows it to be shown on TV. This allows the movie to be shown on late night television, which will publicize our film more and bring more audience at the cinema.

4) Who would be the audience for your media product?

Our initial target audience were teenagers and adults from 15-50 year old. We decided on this because we have a young girl in the clip, which means teenagers of her age, could relate to her and we also included a man, who is around the age of 50 so that we could have an older audience engaged as well.

We aimed to achieve a BBFC rating of 15 with Voices; this allows our thriller to be shown to a wide range of audience excluding very young children. We found from our research that Voices would not have been suitable for children as it involved a scene with killing which would be very difficult for a child of 11 to understand. Making our thriller a PG or a 12 certificate would not have been suitable as if we continued to film the whole movie it would probably be very graphic and most likely give children nightmares.

The BBFC rating for James Bond is 12 so we used this as an example to try and push our thriller as far as it could go so we could get a larger audience.

5) How did you attract/address your particular audience?

We found from our research that viewers preferred thrillers set in normal locations such as Harrow. The main thing we learnt from our research we learnt that children being the protagonist attracted a large audience. From these findings we decided to use a teenage girl in our thriller to fulfil our audiences’ expectations. Some people also said they like to have tense music, which sets an atmosphere in the scene. Baring this in mind we included very tense and creepy music.

We used our actors to relate to the audience so for example, the young girl in our film related to other young girls in our audience. The old man also bought in audiences from the older generation. To grab the attention on the audience we had one villain and it wasn’t clear if the was a hero/heroin as we didn’t give everything away.

6) What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing the product?

Being the camerawoman I had to learn the in’s and out’s of the Canon XM2. I had a few problems trying to understand how to do a pull focus but it never worked, as we wanted to. We did a few tests but in the end we decided not to use them. This was because if you turn the lens too far or too little it would not focus as you want it to, so you have to do it very slowly and carefully.

I also found when shooting outside (the opening boot seat) we had to do a few test runs as the camera had to adjust to the light. the first few times the shot was coming out white, we could see our actor as the boot was closing again. After a few times of doing this, the camera was adjusted to the light and we could finally shoot.

Also whilst shooting that particular shot, we were on a main road so the noise of the cars overpowered the text of the actors. So, to fix this, in the editing suite we had to tone down the background noise and turn up the dialogue on Final Cut Pro.

We also had to learn how to cut and edit shots together so the continuity was correct. I learnt how to do this on Final Cut Pro by capturing each individual shot before hand and then putting them all together. A few problems we found with this was that some members in our group didn’t know how to use a Mac so we had to start from scratch and that took up some of our time in the editing suite.

When shooting the house scenes we decided to use an external sennheiser gun mic so it would pick up the sound of the papers scrunching. The problems we found with using the gun mic was that we had been given it with hardly any battery left so it turned on then turned off after 2 minutes of being on. I had to put on headphones to hear what sounds where being picked up from the mic so I knew whether we needed to turn it down or get closer.

I also used search engines such as Google to search certain websites to find actors or to help me understand media terms.

Also over the internet I learnt how to blog on a website called blogger.com. This was useful as we had to post all our research documents on to a blog page. This was done by going to ‘new post’ on our home page and copying our text onto the box and posting it.

This didn’t prove difficult at all. Some people including myself had already had there own blogs up before hand which gave me a head start on how to add new blogs and add videos and other things which make our blog more exciting.

We put up our video on YouTube through a YouTube account. This was done by logging into our account and simply adding a new video. We then had to transfer the video from YouTube to our blog and this had a very long process attached to it. We had to copy the coding of the YouTube link, start a new post and edit the html and paste the YouTube link on that.

7) Looking back to your preliminary task, what do you feel that you have learnt in the progression from it to the full products?

Whilst we were planning the preliminary task we had very bad communication problems with each other. Eventually we decided to go with one idea and stick with it. We had some problems planning what shots we needed as we hadn’t drawn a storyboard and all we had was the script in hand.

We tried to get as many shots as possible so we could get a good continuity in editing. The camera and tripod didn’t prove to be a problem as we learnt how to use them before hand. When we started to edit our sequence we had a few problems with continuity. Some of the shots we took didn’t make sense and that lead us to re-shoot. The next time we did it we had a list of shots we needed this was to make sure our continuity was good.

During the actual filming for the thriller production we faced fewer problems as everyone in the group knew what they were doing and we had completed all of the research documents, project schedule and script development.

We had the correct actors, props and locations to create a professional thriller opening. We shot scenes from different angles so we had choice when we got in the editing suite.

Overall I am very pleased with the outcome of our thriller sequence. My group worked very well together and we got through things quickly and efficiently. We are a lot more confident with all the filming equipment and we also learnt how to blog which we are still doing to this point.

The Day After Tomorrow Opening Sequence
Sub-genre: Sci-Fi, Adventure and Action
Rating: 15
Written and Directed by:  Roland Emmerich

With respect to camera work and sound the first thing we see in the beginning of the clip is the Metro Goldwyn Mayer (MGM) trademark lion. This connotes power and authority as well as giving validity to the film. Following this the title sequence starts properly. Fading up from black, white san-serif text appears fading in and out with the credits giving us information about who made the film. This effect makes it look very ghostly and puts fear to the viewer and adds tension to the movie. Whilst the titles are rolling we can hear a non-diagetic sound of a girl chiming and we can also hear violins in the background. The girl chiming makes us get goose bumps because it’s very quiet and all you can hear is her and her voice is hitting really high notes. The fact that the music is so calm makes you feel very peaceful relaxed and forget about everything. The black background then gradually fades and we get a CGI tracking shot of blue water with ice. This is a CGI shot because Antarctica couldn’t be tracked that well. During the opening sequence we get an Ariel view of Antarctica giving us our setting for the movie. We see large ice burgs and the blue water. Blue signifies serenity and peace as it is a very tranquil colour the blue also tells us that were at sea somewhere. Over the water we can see the name of the film appear but what the director has done is make it seem like the title is actually there floating on top of the ice and creating a shadow instead of just adding it normally. He did this in my opinion to make it seem as if the name is very important and very big and bold that it creates a shadow. This could also connote that ‘The Day After Tomorrow’ will cast a shadow upon the world and the fact that it’s over the ice suggests that the future actions could relate to the cold and ice.
As the camera continues to look over the icy land a caravan appears and we get a 360 look of the convoy. This is done so that we can see the setting fully and it connotes that the convoy is the only thing around for miles. As we get the 360 'Larsen b ice shelf Antarctica' appears on the bottom of the screen so we now have a destination that we can identify. From the 360 we cut to a close up of the American flag. This tells us that the camp is held by the Americans. We then get a shot of two characters. We instantly get a conventional scene with an old man teaching a younger man how to work the drill. 'You see how it's done?' shows that the older man is trying to teach the younger one something. The younger man then responds 'yeah I think I got it' shows he's not too sure he understood and his language connotes that he's very laid back and has lack of experience. 'Boss will chew my head off if these chords get messed up' shows that the older man is not the one in charge and that someone else controls him. This is shown by the way the older man speaks about him. We then track the older man who goes to a pile of metal canisters with cylinders of ice inside them and picks up 3. From that we then cut to the inside of the convoy and we get a mid shot of the old man opening the door from the inside. We then track the old man to go further inside the convoy which introduces us to the third character which must be the boss. The camera then tilts up so we see both men’s faces. 'You let Jason operate the drill?' this connotes that the boss has no trust in Jason and that he cares about his work. We then cut outside and we see a mid shot of Jason working on the drill. We then cut again to a close up of the floor and a crack appearing which starts go get bigger and the camera starts to tilt up so we can see how long the crack is. We then cut back to Jason and a close up if the drill going straight through to the ground and Jason trying to pull it up. As the crack circles him and the drill we can see fear in his face which connotes that he is very scared and doesn't know what’s going on. We then cut back to the convoy where we get a mid shot of both the old man and the bosses face. They don’t say anything they stand in silence as they are listening to what's going on outside. The effect of the silence is vital as it builds suspense and Showa that they too are confused as to what's happening. We then get a high angle mid shot of Jason circled by the crack and the boss and the old man are being tracked outside. Once they get
All three characters were dressed in yellow snow outfits. This connotes that it was very cold and they are quiet open and happy as they have chosen yellow out of all possible colours. This scene was set in Antarctica and we could hear wind blowing throughout the whole scene which showed it was very cold and abandoned. The fact that the convoy was the only thing around for miles connotes that these three men must be there for work as no one would live there or go for a holiday. They had a waving American flag at the beginning of the scene this connotes that they are very proud Americans and that they might be the first ones to ever step foot on that certain area of Antarctica. The convoy was very simple on the outside, normal and looked a bit like a tin can. Despite how the outside looks the inside was the total opposite. The inside of the convoy was full of information and high technology which connotes that they are there for work and might be researchers.

In conclusion what I have gained from watching a clip from a sci-fi movie is that to gain the viewers attention and to build suspense one technique to use is silence. Silence can build a very tense atmosphere and make the viewer think what's going to happen next and want to keep watching. Silence in this scene was used when jack was about to jump across the divide. Another main technique which I think is good to build suspense is close ups of people’s faces at very intense moments. So for example re close up of jacks face when he saw how big the gap has gotten showed that he was surprised and might have been scared. By using a close up we can gain the upper hand of making the viewer have different opinions on how the character might feel.

Proposal

Thriller Proposal

Brief
Our target audience was 15-35 year olds therefore we were asked to create a 2 minute opening sequence to our own thriller movie for this age range.

Research findings
In our research we found out that the key to a good thriller is the use of music and sound effects. Most people said that music is what makes the ‘’thrill’’ in the thriller as it creeps in unexpectedly and induldges the audience. Low key lighting is essential as it doesn’t reveal too much as to what is happening and leaves an element of surprise. The genre we have decided on is a horror thriller as we can come up with more advanced and in depth scripts based on our experiances watching horror movies. We also think that they appeal more to our age range and target audience 15- 35 year olds as they will be allowed to view some aspects of violence. For our subject we concentrated on the element of suspicion as we wanted to make our child actress as spooky and twisted as possible. Costume is important as it reveals a lot such as if the girl is wealthy, what era they are living in and the characteristic of the kid. Although we would like out thriller to be a big Hollywood box office film due to our production being set in a British location with unknown British actors we feel that it would be a British independent film.
Initial Ideas

Irfaat

In my idea the overall plot would involve Jack,12 year old boy who is guilt stricken after his younger sister recently passed away. His mother is neglecting him as she assumes it is his fault. Jack claims to see her but no one believes him. Mary (the dead sister) keeps pestering jack to do bad things like their mum or she will be forced to kill him. If he succeeds then he will be rewarded with something in a mysterious box. He tries to tell his mother but she won’t listen so he is left with a terrible decision.

For the opening sequence, we fade up an extreme close-up of bright blue eyes which slowly fade to bright red. The camera tracks backwards revealing an empty house with a boy sitting in a corner covered in blood, a dead woman's body lying lifeless in front of him.  The camera pans down to a photo of a little girl on the floor nearby. It then cuts to a flash back of a close up of the little girl’s feet standing  on the ledge. Voice over of little boys voice saying '' jump Mary , go on you won’t fall and hurt yourself go on , if you do I'll show you what's in my box , just jump'' while camera pans up revealing girl looking worried fade to blackness voice over  of screams then zooms into the moon which then graphic matches to mother's eye. Cut to close up of hands laying down a flower on a gravestone pan up to the name on the gravestone. Cut to medium shot of mum hunched on the floor crying and the ghost of the little girl holding mums shoulder. Cut to little boy standing at the train station with mother. Little girl’s stands on the other platform while people walking past. Boy says to mother '' mom i can see Mary, mom she's pm the other platform'' mother says to boy '' don't be stupid Mary's dead'' medium close up of Mary waving. Train goes past and Mary disappears. Over the shoulder shot of jack in the bathroom looking in the mirror suddenly Mary appears '' you have to do it, look in the box you will find it, go and kill mom'' Mary says '' i can’t, Mary tell me what's going on tell me why you’re doing this'' jack says jack turns around ( eye line match and shot reverse shot while dialogue is going on also following the 180 degree rule.) Mary is gone. extreme close up of box hands opening box  camera pans up revealing the boys worried face then cuts backs to the box slowly opening suddenly the door is opened. The camera quick cuts from door to box being suddenly closed. cut to the word jack engraved on the tree.

Courtney

Overall in the film, the main characters are a mother, father and two children, a girl aged 8 and a boy aged 11. They are on a camping trip in a quaint little forest. It is autumn time and the forest is covered in leaves and becoming more dark and cold each day. They plan to stay there for a long weekend and participate in traditional things like toasting marshmallows on a campfire and going for long walks. After their happy first night they awake in the morning to find their car drowned in the middle of the lake as if somebody has pushed it into there. They think it is another group of young campers trying to pull a prank on them. As they try to use their phones to call out to friends and family they soon find that they have no signal and the only way to get out of the forest is by foot. The camera keeps flashing back and forth from the families dilemma to someone spying on the family from behind the tree’s and they are breathing in a un-humanly way. As night dawns they have to set up their tent as the children are getting tired.  The little girl is spooked by shadows she can see through the tent and the noise of tree’s swishing in the wind. They wake up the next morning to find the girl missing. As they run around the area looking for her the mother comes across her body on the cold damp floor. She is lying face down. The mother runs to her and screams for the little girl to respond as she turns her body around, a half bitten face is revealed. Dripping with blood you wouldn’t even be able to identify that it is the same girl as half her face is missing. Suddenly it dawns on the family that there is something big and evil lurking around the forest.

The opening two minutes of the film will feature a mum and son standing on a quiet motorway with a forest far in the distance. The mum has blood on her face and ripped clothes and the boy looks scrubby and dirty and is grasping onto his mum. They are trying to thumb a lift from passing cars. The camera zooms into their faces and then they become blurred as the forest comes into focus. As the camera zooms right up into the forest a loud pitched scream is heard and the screen goes black. Then we see a family un-loading stuff from the car. Laughter can be heard as there is a MCU of two children rolling down a hill.

Detjona

What I had in mind to do was basically have one character and she would be an alcoholic at 23 who was going through a phase in her life where she would be really alone. What happen are her subconscious acts on her and it’s this little girl from her childhood who speaks to her. Thinking the younger girl actually exists the older girl starts to listen to her as she feels they are friends.

the first thing we see is a close up of the older girls eye it has to be red and look quite tired to show she is drunk so the audience gets an idea of her alcohol problems. Then we cut to her looking in the mirror and saying 'what do I do?' to herself and the younger girl emerges from the dark behind her saying 'you know what you have to do'. This cuts to a clip of her childhood and the older girl if the young girl now and she are being molested by her step-dad which has now led her to be the person she is. We then cut again to her being in an AA meeting at the age of 23 and she doesn’t really want to be there but she’s been sent there by her mum. So we get a close up of her face introducing herself to the group. We then cut again to a side view of her face and her in a car driving and drinking and the little girl next to her. The young girl keeps saying 'you can do it' making her voice gets faster and louder as the car accelerates. Then the older girl starts to cry and says 'I can’t' as we see flashbacks of her childhood. The scene then finishes with a long shot of the car driving off. Titles roll with crew names.

My initial idea involves an overall film plot featuring a 12 year old boy who’s an orphan. He lost his parents when he was 2 so he didn’t have any parental love. He was looked after by his grandparents until he was 5. His grandparents sensed that there was something wrong with him so they put him into a care home. He would always lash out at strangers and get into fights with people a lot older than him. He was quite secluded and kept himself to himself. One day, a woman arrives at the care home to start her new job and he finds out that she used to be in the same care home as Jack until her mother died and she became a bit crazy and demented and had to be put into a mental institute. The boy whose name is Jack becomes really attached to the woman named Jeni. She reveals to him that she had a son but he died stillborn. They both stick to each other and enjoy each other’s company. The only downside is that Jeni still hasn’t gotten rid of the crazy part of her mind and she does everything to keep little Jack safe. Jack on the other hand, doesn’t take too kindly to her wanting to keep him safe and decides to take action.

My idea for the opening sequence is to have Jack staring out of a window in the living room. Behind him the curtains are closed, isolating him. He then steps back slightly, moving the curtain to stare down at the floor. Lying there is a body. Who’s the body on the floor?

There is then a flashback of Jeni and Jack talking about their personal experience with the loss of their parents; Jeni with her mum and Jack with both his mum and dad. Jeni and Jack are outside in the garden on the swings talking when suddenly Jeni seems visibly shaken, telling Jack that she lost her son and wants to care for Jack like her own. Jack doesn’t like this and screams at her telling her that he already has a mum and doesn’t need another one. Jeni tells him that his mum passed away but he refuses to believe it. He then rushes inside.

Back in real time, we now see Jack stroking long, bloody hair and speaking in a hushed tone, “Yes, mother you were right. I will love you forever.”

He then has a flashback. This time he’s in a classroom and everyone’s drawing pictures of their family but Jack isn’t. He’s drawing a picture of a black house and his mum and dad covered in blood, with coffins all in darkness. His teacher see’s the picture, tries to snatch it off him but he refuses. She then sends him to the head teacher.

Jack then comes out of the flashback and you see a tear streaming down his cheek. He turns towards the body and hugs it saying, “Here you go mummy. You won’t throw my picture away. You’ll cherish it forever just like you cherish me.” He takes out the picture from his pocket and places in the body’s hand, kissing it while he does that.

After that he goes into a third flashback of him being surrounded by children in a birthday party being asked to do a dare after losing a competition. The dare was to see who could pull their own tooth out and because he lost he had to do that dare. He eventually pulls it out to the disgust of the children. The parents after seeing him do this send him home embarrassing him in front of the children. He sees a drip of blood fall from his lip and catches it with his tongue. He starts to laugh and you see a glimmer of evil in his eyes. It’s from that moment that the audience realise that he’s different from other young boys.

Jack comes out of the flashback again and pulls out a tooth from his pocket. He then places it in the body’s mouth saying, “Mommy, I think you’re missing a tooth.” He starts to get angry because the tooth isn’t going in. He starts stabbing the tooth into the body’s gums, screaming and laughing while he’s doing it.
